Canada is a destination for millions of people who want to experience the country’s natural beauty. Lucky for us, it’s in our back yard!
We don’t like to waste our opportunities. Summer is short so we pack about a year’s worth of outdoor fun into a few short, sunny months. We head for our cabin in the forest and then to a spot that doesn’t show up in any guidebooks. We’ve been coming here for years and even though there’s no official trailhead, the trail is well-worn by those in the know. After a short walk through the forest and up a mostly-dry creek bed, the scene opens up in front of you, as perfect as ever. You’re standing on a rock shelf with a crystal clear lake nestled between two sloping mountains.
There are a couple other groups there too – there’s even a tent off to the side. Right now though, everyone’s in the sun on the rocks.
This is a cliff-jumping spot. 25 feet from jump to the surface of the water. You’ve been doing it every year since you first started coming here. In fact, this spot is one of the reasons you bought a cabin here.
Maybe your knees don’t have the spring they used to but when you stand on the edge and look down, the adrenaline gets going and you know you’ve still got it.
That cold mountain water takes your breath away but as soon as you get out of the water and feel the sun on your skin again, you crave more.
After a few jumps, you head back to your cabin. As the sun sets, you light a fire in your fire pit and reminisce with those who matter most to you. Minutes quickly turn into hours as you re-tell the story about that one time you tried to flip into the lake but landed flat on your back.
This is our playground and you’ve built yourself a life that lets you play in it.
You care for your cabin. When you arrive for the season and turn on the water and gas, you also make a maintenance list. You check for leaks, and examine the windows and doors. Maybe you fix that screen door or bottom step that has become worn from years of use and our sometimes harsh Canadian winters. And of course, your cabin is insured, along with your home, cars and boat.
All of this helps you protect your assets and gives you peace of mind so you can maybe try that flip into the lake again. Or maybe not. No matter what – you are a Weekend Warrior.
