Fishing is not an escape from life, but often a deeper immersion into it- Harry Middleton
This morning, I was shopping for fridge magnets of all things. As I walked the aisles of the dollar store, I could tell I was bored. Sure, I needed fridge magnets but this isn’t what my younger self envisioned adulthood to be.
Why wasn’t I eating ice cream for dinner? Why wasn’t I staying up all night playing video games? Should I go to the gym? Most importantly, why wasn’t I fishing on what was a perfect, sunny, warm South-East Alberta Day?
I don’t expect you to believe what happened next, but I swear to you it’s true.
I rounded a corner in that dollar store and ran into two of my friends discussing which chips to bring on their fishing trip. They had a free day and were heading to the Cypress Hills for an afternoon of fishing. They invited me to come along. Before they could even finish their question, I had said yes.
I hustled home to grab my fishing gear and before I knew it, we were rolling down the highway with a boat on the roof of my friend’s truck.
Now I’m spending the afternoon on the water, surrounded by the peace of the Cypress Hills. I cast my line a few times. In fact, it’s dangling as I write this. I don’t even know if there’s a worm on the line, but that’s not the point of today. It’s the weekend and I’m on a lake, soaking up the day.
All of this made me remember: I work hard all week, just like you. Maybe you answer email at 6am. Maybe you have meetings at 6pm. You have a lot to look after so your weekends should be yours. Be a Weekend Warrior.
Anyways, I don’t know when I’m going to get those fridge magnets …
